All News “Tunnel House” – 2019 Great Lakes by DesignDecember 26, 2019

Great Lakes By Design recently featured our “Tunnel House” project in their Volume 3 Issue 6 magazine. The article features the collaboration with Zahn Builders to make this dune-filled site become a forever home for the builder.
The article highlights the history of building on this site as well as the story behind the overall design inspiration for the home. Focusing on the tunnel as the starting point of the design, the historic character of the home also has many nods to modern design in it. The overall aesthetic features a gambrel roof that lends itself to Dutch colonial architecture, while using an offset pattern of the clapboard siding making it more updated and contemporary. A monochromatic exterior pallette include the gray hues in the natural stone around the base of the home contrasted by white siding inspired by shingle-style architecture.

This Lake Michigan waterfront home is set naturally into the surrounding landscape and pulls inspiration from the natural elements of the dune-scape around it. Building into the site’s orginal natural dune was influenced by the previous existing cottage as well as the desires of the homeowner. A walkway stair leading from the driveway up to the main entrace of the home is carved into the natural slope as well. The main level of the house is open lakeside views in the kitchen, living room, and craft room, as well as the master suite tucked away to the side. The upstairs is host to 3 bedroom and bathroom suites for the kids. The basement, which includes the tunnel, includes a bunk room, 2nd kitchen, and access to the beach. The lakeside of the home also features and outdoor patio overlooking the dune for year-round enjoyment. This patio features a grill, lounge seating, and heaters protected by retractable screens.
