This modern home has a traditional and simple form with contemporary finishes, making a bold statement on Lake Michigan’s waterfront.
These clients dreamed of a new house with grand views of the lake from a comfortable but edgy formal living room. They also wanted contrast and edginess without a lot of embellishments. This desire was expressed in both the architectural style as well as the floor plan and material choices.
The architectural style of this home is a mixture of contemporary and traditional elements, giving this family a unique beach cottage. Combining the traditional two gable ends with a white smooth-stucco finish and dark gridded windows makes this home an architectural statement while respecting the property and creating a classic lake experience.
The main aspect that drove the layout of this home was the property. The house sits directly on Lake Michigan’s waterfront in a wooded lot with small rolling hills. The home has a grand central entrance and all the small spaces are arranged to branch off from the main entrance halls. The formal living room which faces the beautiful lake views is 18’ tall creating strategic and powerful coastal views. There is also a more intimate family room located off the formal living room as well as a formal dining room, kitchen area and nook, kids’ playroom, and office space all located on the main level. This layout creates an experience by pulling you through the house towards the views without giving away the views as soon as you enter. The walk-out terrace transitions naturally into the topography changes of the back yard, making it feel as though it always belonged on this property.
Constant collaboration with the builder and the interior designer also helped make this house a natural fit for the property. The clients’ desire for contrast, edginess, and traditional form was able to drive the design because it was incorporated into every aspect of the home, both interior and exterior.
