The Bay Street Cottages
Harbor Springs, MI

Good things really do come in small packages. At just 975 square feet, this quaint cottage proves that a second home doesn’t have to be a sprawling seaside manse to be a relaxing retreat. Nestled by the shore of Harbor Springs. Michigan, the Bay Street Cottages development combines sophisticated design and turnkey service to create a carefree spot to get away from the hectic world for a weekend.

Developer Rob Mossburg created these jewel box homes in the same spirit of relaxed elegance that epitomizes Harbor Springs, a resort community along Lake Michigan. His design is faithful to the breezy architectural style of the area, using cedar shingles, lap and board-and-batten siding, and beaded-board overhangs with rafter tails.

The cottages are painted white, a practical color given the harsh winters and the need for a fresh coat of paint each spring. Green, red, or yellow trim provides individuality. The interior of each cottage is a study in doing a lot with a little; each is packed with smart space-saving ideas.

Rob Mossburg designed the Bay Street Cottages with community in mind. To encourage pedestrian traffic, he located the development near the central business district and across from a public beach. Plus, there are several green spaces within the hamlet. He also tucked each cottage’s garage away from street view. His most universal design principle to encourage neighborliness, however, is giving each home a porch and a Dutch door to foster communication with passersby.
